Portions of the Peter Jackson film "Heavenly Creatures" were shot in Port Levy. At this place, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, two 16 year old girls from Christchurch, saw their imaginary Fourth World on 3 April 1953, the so-called Port Levy Revelation. It was never explained what actually happened then (a gateway through the clouds, they called it).

More recently parts of 'Z for Zacharia' were filmed in Port Levy.  The film starring Margot Robbie, Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor is about a girl who survives a nuclear war through living in a small remote valley with its own self contained weather system.

Banks Peninsula is the most prominent volcanic feature of the South Island of New Zealand, made up of numerous bays and coves, the two dominant craters now form the harbours of Lyttleton to the North and Akaroa to the South.

The central mass of the peninsula is rugged with Mount Herbert forming the highest peak at 920 mtrs.   Paths leading to the summit of Mount Herbert can be accessed via Port Levy, as well as the Summit Road, another popular scenic route.

A large mammal marine sanctuary now covers much of the peninsula restricting set net fishing to conserve the rare Hector Dolphins that are only found around the peninsula.
